BEFORE SHE KNEW IT, a week had passed and Izabel found herself falling into certain routines in Angels Gorge. As promised, a space was made for her in the chapel where she prepared and taught lessons in reading and writing, and a little history, for whichever women chose to attend. It started with two or three, but by the week’s end almost two dozen packed out the room, varying from young to old, and she had to see about forming some kind of schedule. They were kind and grateful and mostly very talkative. The dancer, Cora, was particularly keen, and became absolutely thrilled at the prospect of learning letters. She was loud and merry, barely in her twenties, always in dresses and corsets that showed off her considerable assets: thick thighs and bulging breasts. Though she wasn’t Izabel’s more slender type, she was distracting with her infectious smile and laughter and regularly bouncing boobs.

Cora and a few others made the days slightly easier with their enthusiasm, inviting Izabel back to the saloon, or the canteen, after class. They bought her food and drinks and sang her praises to anyone who’d listen. In the first few days, that was enough, with the exhaustion and the confusion of it all, to drag Izabel through without a moment to despair or scheme.

Towards the end of the week, Izabel stayed out later in the bar to try and relax more, soaking up the atmosphere. There had been little drama since those first two days, and she saw more commonly that the town kept busy by daylight and partied hard by night, with drink flowing heavily, plenty of dancing, gambling and music. Izabel was particularly captivated by watching Cora when she got on stage, throwing high kicks and shaking her chest about. She was a favourite of the other patrons too, who cheered her on, throwing her paper money and generally trying to chat her up between dances. She was game enough with the men who lingered around, sometimes taking them up to her room, but she flirted just as readily with the women, and glanced Izabel’s way with a mischievous look more than a few times.

The size stones, which the girls generally referred to as either their ‘green’ or their ‘button’, Izabel found to have various curious applications, past the initial terrible threat she’d first encountered from them. The more adept women shrank crates of goods to be stacked up and carried out to trade in other towns, and craftswomen used the stones to grow large to take care of bigger projects, like roof repairs. Then, the stones came into play during the evening entertainment, as people were occasionally shrunk to swim in mugs of alcohol, race across the bar or slide down the banister. Those were the more innocent uses: later in the nights as spirits rose higher and more alcohol flowed, men and women alike were made small and pressed into chests or smothered by various body parts.
